The effects of COVID-19 are being felt around the globe. Compared to many people in the world, I am very lucky by how little COVID-19 is affecting my life; however I was still devastated when I heard that my ultimate frisbee season was cancelled. In the grand scheme of things, this is only a minor inconvenience, but to me not being able to play ultimate is heartbreaking. COVID-19 has become a gigantic obstacle between me and my goals. I believe that I can use my feelings to help me put into perspective the emotions and hardships of people around the world. If I am heartbroken about a minor inconvenience, then there must be people who are truly suffering.
People around the world have been working hard to keep track of the COVID-19 news. Many people are tracking how fast it's spreading, the severity of the symptoms, and it's effect on the economy. I feel it is very important to not overlook COVID-19's effect on people's well-being. As we know, these are challenging times. Students are stressed about their education and future, and other people are anxious about their keeping food on the table. This is not only a challenging time, but also a strange time. Humans are very social creatures, and socially isolating from others may have negative effects. I've experienced some of these negative effects in the last few weeks: loneliness, frustration, sadness. I can't imagine the emotions of people who have had their lives flipped upside down, or those who have lost loved ones.
Our lives may seem bleak due to COVID-19, but the most important thing to do right now is to stay optimistic. Everyone seems powerless, but there are things that individuals can do right now. I'm sure we've all heard what we can do to halt the spread of disease, but there are also things we can do to benefit our mental well-being. The website https://www2.hse.ie/wellbeing/mental-health/covid-19/minding-your-mental-health-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak.html has some suggestions to help maintain mental health and well-being during this outbreak: staying informed but setting limits for news and media, staying connected to others, and keeping up healthy routines. Personally, I have been communicating with my friends over Facetime or over the phone, and I have been using exercise to help clear my head. This pandemic affects all of us, but we will get through it together.
